Hey there, we’re glad you found us.

Welcome to The Rutledge House, the premier event venue located in the heart of historic downtown Charleston. Prepare to step into a classic example of southern elegance, an ideal setting for weddings, rehearsal dinners, welcome parties, social gatherings, and corporate functions. Featuring original heart pine floors with floor-to-ceiling windows, our 5500 square foot venue can accommodate 350 guests for a cocktail reception and 175 guests for a seated dinner or ceremony.

Built in 1845, the beautifully-restored house at the center of Rutledge Avenue takes its name from some of the most prominent Charleston citizens at the time of our country’s independence. Edward Rutledge, the son of Irish immigrant John Rutledge, established one of the area’s first law practices in the mid-1700’s. He rose to prominence after freeing newspaper editor Thomas Powell from prison, who was arrested for publishing critical articles of British rule. The acclaim led to Rutledge being named to the First Continental Congress and, at 26, was the the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence. His father John would later become the first governor of South Carolina.

Our first floor, the Wine Cellar, makes a fabulous way to greet your guests. With reclaimed wood and exposed beams, the room showcases the original brick and stucco walls. This one-of-a-kind space is perfect for tastings, passed hour d’orves, and casual entertaining in a simple yet highly sophisticated space.

Journey up the iron staircase to the Rutledge Ballroom, a spacious second floor featuring original wood flooring, immaculate exposed brick fireplaces, and 15-foot crown molded ceilings. The room boasts our enclosed Charleston single-style piazzas, a modern twist on our city’s iconic design to keep your guests cool and the vibe festive.

The top floor, Upstairs at Rutledge, is the best place in the area for a raucous celebration. This event space features a versatile floor plan, offering endless possibilities to transform your vision into a reality.

With an abundance of space and charm, The Rutledge House is Charleston’s most accommodating destination to create memories that last a lifetime.
